Think, Experiment, and Create at Imaginate!

Last week, Kat and I were able to get a sneak preview of the Arizona Science Center's newest exhibit, Imaginate. Focusing on imagination and creativity, this exhibit is my absolute favorite so far!

Imaginate encourages kids to make their dreams and curiosity a reality, while utilizing skills in science, engineering, art, and math. Kids are learning at every station, and they don't even realize it because they're having so much fun!

As soon as you walk in, you're greeted with two huge flat screen TVs with several blinking eyes, opening mouths, and sniffing noses. Kids are encouraged to change things up a bit as they add these bits to their own faces, and then leave their crazy likeness on the wall for all to see.

Hey! How are you doing? Welcome to the Science Center!

Did you know that Phoenix has a colony of about 10,000-20,000 Mexican Free-Tailed Bats, roosting right in the middle of the city? At the 40th Street and Camelback canal, these bats take over the overflow tunnel from the months of May through October, as they take care of their young, hunt for food, and take advantage of the abundant hunting opportunities throughout the summer.

Since Kat and I learned about the bats and this bat tunnel last year, we have taken several trips out to see them. We wanted to go out one last time before they migrate south for the winter, and this time, we decided to invite other Phoenix families to come join us! The bats are so cool to see, we wanted to share the excitement of learning about them and watching them with others. So, we decided to set up our very first field trip!

What to Expect At Hacker Haven!

Are you ready to MAKE?
On Tuesday nights, we head to the Phoenix Public Library to hang out at their Hacker's Haven maker space. It is so awesome to see that Phoenix is funding these spaces for kids to get together and get creative!

Hacker's Haven is a place for kids, teenagers, and parents to gather and work with electronics. There are people there who can explain how to make circuits, how to use the electronics, and how they work. This is a space for kids to get together, play and invent on their own and with each other, in an environment that encourages hands on learning and development.

I'm Going To Be Speaking At Ignite Phoenix!

Update: Today's the day! If you want to watch the show, you can tune in to the live feed on the front page of Ignite Phoenix's website tonight! They'll have it up when the show starts at 6:30 pm (MST). Otherwise, I'll be sure to share the video when it's up!

A couple of weeks ago, I received a very interesting email from Jeff Moriarty, the founder of Ignite Phoenix, inviting me to submit a talk to this year's event. Ignite is an annual event showcasing 18 passionate speakers giving snapshots of brilliance, creativity, and inspiration from their lives. It's a lot like TED, only the talks are 5 minutes long instead of 18. Previous speakers have included Bogi Lateiner of 180 degree auto, Jonathan McNamara who builds giant robots, and Sean Tierney, who "falls up" in his love for paragliding.

This year, I will be joining the ranks of passionate presenters! I will one of the 18 speakers at Ignite Phoenix!!!
